What Are Dental Implants and How Do They Work?
Dental implants replace missing teeth by anchoring a titanium post into your jawbone, topped by a natural-looking crown, bridge or denture. Once placed, the implant integrates with the bone, creating a stable foundation that functions much like a natural tooth root.
This helps restore strength when biting and chewing, prevents jawbone shrinkage and supports facial structure, offering a long-lasting solution that looks and feels like your own teeth. At Light Lane Dental Practice, we use 3-D planning to ensure optimal placement, meaning you can expect:
- A stronger bite and ability to chew your favourite foods
- A secure solution — no loose denture worries
- Prevention of bone shrinkage and facial collapse
- Confidence to speak, smile and socialise without hiding teeth

The Dental Implant Procedure
Multiple phases of the dental implant procedure are typically spaced out over several months. If necessary, the procedure begins with extractions. The implant is then placed in the jawbone, where it will eventually fuse. Once it has healed, an abutment is attached to the implant to support a crown, bridge, or complete denture. Once completed, the implant will appear and feel like a natural tooth, and it will require the same care as your natural teeth.
Who Qualifies for Dental Implants?
The ideal candidate for dental implants would be an individual missing one or more teeth. This may have been caused by trauma or decay. You should have overall good oral health and no signs of gum disease. Additionally, you must be a nonsmoker, as smoking increases the risk of complications by retarding the healing process. You are also ineligible for treatment if you have received radiotherapy to your jaw or if your diabetes is uncontrolled. We will discuss all of these restrictions with you during your consultation for dental implants.
Are You a Suitable Candidate?
Most adults missing one or more teeth are eligible, including those withL
- A single missing tooth or several missing teeth
- Existing dentures seeking a permanent upgrade
- Healthy gums and good general health
We will undertake a full assessment including a CBCT scan, oral health check and medical history. Factors such as heavy smoking, uncontrolled diabetes or active gum disease may require prior stabilisation before proceeding.

Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs)
Have a question about your dental treatment? We’ve answered the most common questions below.
How long will the implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular reviews, implants can last 15 + years and often a lifetime. We’ve had many patients with unchanged implants after a decade.
s the treatment painful?
Most patients describe the placement day as comfortable, with swelling similar to an extraction. We provide detailed after-care instructions and pain-relief guidance.
Will my dentures be removed?
In many cases yes — but one option is to stabilise your existing dentures on implants if you prefer a removable solution. This is discussed at your consultation.
Can I drive home on the same day?
Yes, if only local anaesthetic is used. If sedation is utilised, please arrange transport home and avoid driving for 24 hours.
