Sedation Dentistry in Coventry
We understand that for some patients, just the thought of visiting the dentist can be overwhelming. Dental anxiety is incredibly common – whether it stems from past experiences, a fear of pain, or general nervousness about treatment. That’s why we are proud to offer sedation dentistry, a safe and effective way to help you feel completely relaxed during your dental care.
Comfortable, Worry-Free Dental Treatment
At Light Lane Dental Practice, we offer intravenous (IV) sedation – a method widely used for nervous patients and those undergoing more complex or lengthy dental treatments. IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream for fast, predictable results.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help patients feel calm and relaxed during dental procedures. Unlike general anaesthesia, which puts you completely to sleep, conscious sedation allows you to remain awake and responsive while feeling drowsy, deeply relaxed, and unaware of the details of your treatment.
Who Can Benefit From Sedation?
Sedation dentistry is ideal for a wide range of patients, including those who:
- Suffer from dental phobia or anxiety
- Have had traumatic dental experiences in the past
- Struggle with a sensitive gag reflex
Find it difficult to sit still for extended periods
Have a low tolerance for pain or sensitive teeth
Need multiple or complex treatments in one visit
During your consultation, we’ll take time to understand your concerns, review your medical history, and determine if sedation is suitable and safe for you.
What to Expect During IV Sedation
Before Your Appointment
- You will need to avoid food for 6 hours before treatment and avoid drinking clear fluids for 2 hours before.
- Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to your appointment and take you home afterward.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid nail polish or artificial nails, as we will monitor your oxygen levels.
During the Procedure
- A small cannula will be placed into a vein in your hand or arm to administer the sedative.
- You will feel relaxed and possibly drowsy, though still able to respond to instructions.
- A local anaesthetic will also be used to completely numb the treatment area.
- Your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing will be monitored throughout for your safety.
Aftercare
- You’ll rest at the practice after your treatment until you’re well enough to go home.
- You must not drive, return to work, or operate machinery for at least 24 hours.
- Most patients have little or no memory of the treatment and report a very positive experience.

Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs)
Have a question about sedation dentistry? We’ve answered the most common questions below.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. IV sedation is very safe when administered by trained professionals. At Light Lane Dental Practice, we follow strict safety protocols, and your vital signs will be continuously monitored throughout the procedure.
Will I be asleep during IV sedation?
No, IV sedation is a form of conscious sedation. You will feel very relaxed and possibly drowsy, but you will remain awake and able to respond to the dentist. Most patients remember very little of the treatment afterwards.
How long does the sedation last?
The sedative effects typically wear off within a few hours, but you may feel groggy for the rest of the day. That’s why we always require that a responsible adult accompany you and take you home.
Who is not suitable for sedation?
While sedation is safe for many people, it may not be appropriate for those with certain medical conditions or for pregnant patients. We will conduct a full medical assessment before offering sedation to ensure it’s safe for you.
